Boy Scout Invitations

Troop leaders in the council are encouraged to contact local 5th and 6th graders about the fun of Scouting.   The opportunity to join a troop during the great upcoming camping season is here!  Special invitations can be personalized to advertise your fun troop events in the near future.  Share the excitement of Boy Scouting with new families in your community

 

The New Scouting Calendars are Ready!

The new calendars for the 2018-2019 year are being distributed as a part of the Program Planning Process, available through both Scout offices.  This wonderful collection event of dates allows your unit to review the council programs throughout the year. Act now to obtain this once-every-springtime treasure.

 

New Tiger Recruitment

Families can find fun summer activities in your pack.  As your Pack has summertime activities planned (and it should), you can recruit all ages of Cub Scouts but especially new Tiger Cubs.  Those boys who are now in kindergarten can be signed up as Tiger Cubs and participate in all the summertime activities.  What a great way to start off the summer with eager new Scouts! 

 

Prairielands Council Derby Winners 

Congratulations to all of our Pinewood Derby race, show and open race winners! With over 150 Scouts in attendance the event went well! Thank you to Horizon Hobby for the fabulous prizes and Worden Martin for their donation of the trophies. Big THANK YOU to Little Cesars, Marco's Pizza, Papa Johns, Old Orchard, County Market, Casey's, and Monicals pizza for their donations. Lastly we thank our volunteers who put in hours of hard work to make this event a success, especially Mike Webb, Robert Sloan, Marilyn Heinsohn, Curt Ware, Crew 25, and APO. Results can be found by going to www.prairielandsbsa.org/pages/pinewood-derby. Extra patches will be for sale at the Scout shop for those who didn't attend.

Training

IOLS: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills This course is required to be considered fully trained as a Scoutmaster or Asst. Scoutmaster. You will enjoy a hands-on overnight experience in the outdoors as you learn the basic outdoor skills you need to coach your Scouts. Meals provided.

The Bloodmobile is coming to Prairielands Council Office

Tuesday, April 24th from 3pm to 5:30pm is your opportunity to give blood that will be used locally at Carle Hospital.

New Youth Protection Training due by October 1

The BSA has rolled out a new, more intensive YPT that all volunteers must complete by Oct 1.

Go to the www.prairielandsbsa.org and see unit resources at the bottom of the home page to take YPT2.

The training has several modules and each module must be completed before breaking.

 

Wood Badge

Hear ye, Hear ye, WOOD BADGE SIGN UP IS OFF AND RUNNING!!! Scouters you do not want to miss taking the premier advanced training course known as WOOD BADGE that will be offered this fall (September 7-9 and October 19-21 @ Camp Drake)to all adult registered leaders, but the catch is, we only have so many spaces available.  So you need to stop by the Scout Shop and paid your deposit ASAP!!  The cost is $240.00 with ONLY a $80.00 deposit down now to secure a spot!!  Wood Badge is an excellent adult training that will only make YOU a better leader in Scouting and your professional life.  Oh did I mention…the food is not your traditional camp food, it is absolutely delicious and the camaraderie of meeting new Scouters will last a lifetime   For more information contact Course Director Marion Knight at:  217 778-4809 /email j-knight0900@att.net or Advisor Lovetta Ash-Simpson 217 531-0217/ lovetta.ash-simpson@scouting.org

With the warm up of spring, outdoor activities will increase for youth at all levels.   There are promotional posters and flyers for all levels of the Scouting program.  Make the families in your community know where to go to join Scouting.

 

Camporee Campskills

Learn to how to build and use a new fire cooking stove.  Learn to make useful camping gear from ordinary supplies! The 2018 Many Trails Spring Camporee will be held on the weekend of May 18-20  where  Scouting events are planned at the Kennekuk Cove County Park near Danville   The registration form  to sign up is

Prairie Fire Spring Rendezvous

The Prairie Fire Spring Camporee is this Friday, April 20 – 22 at Camp Robert Drake, with check-in starting at 6:00 pm on Friday and 8:00 am on Saturday.  To register fill out the registration form at the office or go to www.prairielandsbsa.org to fill it out. Turn in payment and registration from by Friday, April 21! Cost for the event is $15, and activities will include: leather work, arrowhead hunt, archery, arrow making, black powder rifle shooting, blacksmithing and much more!

 

Troop Court of Honor Dates

Please let your District Executive know about any upcoming Court of Honors as we would like to celebrate the achievements of those Scouts with your Unit, as well as conduct the 2018 Friends of Scouting presentation. Chainsaw Safety Training

Skilled forester Gene Mochel will provide the BSA Chain Saw Safety Training course on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Camp Robert Drake.  The course will begin at 8:00 am.  Please bring any chain saw equipment and safety gear that you can for the training course.  The registration form is 

 

Helping Camp Drake

You can assist in helping Camp Drake with some needed supplies for this summer maintenance requirements.  Units or individuals can help upgrade equipment by purchasing or donating new or nearly new equipment.  Units can also provide or donate needed supplies to assist Camp Drake in its operations.  The 2018 wish list is below.  What can you give to help?   Please call Mike Graham for specific descriptions at 356-7291 x 6447.

New Boy Scout Camp Fees Discount

An exemption from the normal camp fee deadline will be allowed for new Scouts.  Any new boy joining your troop in the spring will be held to a later  deadline.  Now is a great time to invite boys of any age to enjoy the excitement of summer camp. Please submit your crossover Scouts to Susan at susan.coller@scouting.org or 217-531-0219 to receive the discount!

 

Bugle Troop

Any Boy Scout can attend Camp Drake as a part of the Prairielands Council provisional camping option without their hometown Scoutmasters.  Join the Bugle Troop from July 15-21 this summer. This summer there are multitudes of adventures you can undertake to fill your summer with fun exciting challenges.  You can come back to camp to work on extra merit badges, awards, relax, or to push yourself to discover new events. 

 

CUB SCOUT

 

Adventure Camp Deadline Change:

To accommodate Cub Campers attending the 2018 “Cubs on the High Seas” Cub Scout Adventure Camp, the next fee deadline for both youth and adult registration has been altered from April 20 to Friday, May 18.   Please have your full fees paid at that time for your fun “on the banks of the Salt Fork” at Cub Scout Adventure Camp.

 

Family Fun Fest

The last weekend of July is set up for a fun family campout at Camp Robert Drake.  All ages levels will be able to enjoy the outdoor events.   Look for the registration materials at www.campdrake.com

Annual Health Form Reminder

The national Boy Scouts of America camp policy mandate medical examinations for week-long summer camp at Camp Drake. All youth participants and adult leaders must present evidence of a physical examination annually for the weekly camp session by a licensed physician AND a health history completed by the adult participant or a parent (for youth participants

 

 

Vermilion TreX for Older Scouts

River Kayaking, ATV Riding, Pistol Shooting, All qualified Scouts will have a variety of choices for adventure.  For older Scouts who choose, trexxers can still attend the outdoor excitement, depending on the size of the activity.  In addition to the activities, there are still opportunities for advancement and merit badges.

The National Order of the Arrow Conference is returning to Indiana University in 2018.  You are invited to be a part of the latest national gathering of the Order of the Arrow.  For one week, all things of the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service will converge on southern Indiana for a grand celebration that the Wimachtiendienk has ever seen.  Start making arrangements now for July 30 to August 4th, 2018 for an Arrowrific event of the ultimate magnitude.  The registration form is
