BSA Announces Membership Fee / Insurance Increase Effective Dec. 1, 2017

To deliver the Scouting program to its 2.3 million youth members, it is occasionally necessary for the Boy Scouts of America to increase membership fees to offset rising costs. As a result, the BSA is increasing the membership fee to $33 for all registered Scouts and adult members effective December 1, 2017.

Membership fees support the services that are necessary to provide Scouting programs to a growing number of youth. Services include ongoing advances in technology, council visits to assist in fundraising, program development and membership campaigns, liability insurance costs, and administrative costs. It is important that we continue to maintain a strong financial position in the future to support and grow Scouting.

Even with the membership increase, Scouting remains an incredible value compared to other youth programs.

The Prairielands Council recognizes that the timing of this announcement may cause units to have to revisit their program budgets as the fee increase will impact the charter renewal process in January.

All of the membership and Boy’s Life fees are passed on to the Boy Scouts of America. The Prairielands Council does not keep any of those funds.  If you have any questions please contact your District Executive.

Activities Committee Meeting Tomorrow Evening

There will be a council activities committee meeting tomorrow evening at 7 pm at the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center.  All are welcome to attend.  The primary purpose of tomorrow evening's meeting will be finalizing details for the Fighting Illini Scout Camporee.

One of the most important qualities developed as part of the Boy Scouts of America is leadership.   Throughout all levels of Scouting, leadership skills are experienced in the planning of events and the management of outings for all ages of our members.  As a part of the Order of the Arrow, young men are tasked with a multitude of responsibilities in service to their troop, as well as support of the lodge operations.   The Arrowmen who accept officer and committee positions in the lodge make a deeper commitment to Scouting, as they volunteer to oversee a 400 member organization with an $8,000 per year budget across a nine county area.  The challenges of leadership at the lodge level enhance the abilities of lodge leaders through organizational planning, volunteer management, financial stewardship, and event operations.  The Arrowmen who commit the selfless service of the duties in an Order of the Arrow lodge over a period of years are eligible to be nominated to the highest level of the brotherhood, the Vigil Honor. Illini Lodge will announce the 2017 class of Vigil Honor members as part of the Fall Pow Wow on Oct. 21.  All Arrowmen are encouraged to attend.

Rocket Kits for New members

As part of the “Launch into Scouting” recruiting drive, new members are receiving a rocket kit and an engine to blast-off this fall.  The Smilin Pumpkin Outdoor Sports Fest will have special rocket launching areas.      Plan now to enjoy the blast off with  model rocketry.

Sign up as a team of (5) or come out as individuals and team up at the event.  Participants will shoot a 100 round standard trap. Individual awards for top 10 shooters plus a bragging rights traveling “Team Event Trophy”.  To register, contact Susan  at  .

Nature Fun at Smilin’ Pumpkin

One fantastic feature for the 2017 Smilin Pumpkin Outdoor Sports Fest will be fun of nature exhibits.  Talented naturalists will be presenting educational info on the wildlife around Camp Drake. The crawly creatures will be visible at the SPIDER SHELTER, on the east side of the main parking lot in central camp.   Mark Sunday, October 29 on your Scouting calendar for the great afternoon “on the banks of the Salt Fork!”

Officer Elections

The positions include Lodge Chief, Vice Chief of Administration, Vice-Chief of Activities, Vice-Chief of Inductions, Secretary, and Treasurer.  All dues-paying Illini Lodge youth members are eligible to run for a position and participate in the election.  In the Order of the Arrow, you are considered a youth member until you turn 21 years of age.

Shooting Sports Staff of Arrowmen

It is only right that Arrowmen guide the Archery range.  Arrowmen of all sizes are needed to help with archery, slingshots, bb guns, bicycling, pedal car races, sports events, and much more.  Please plan to help at the Smilin Pumpkin  on Sunday, October 29 from noon until 5:00 pm at Camp Drake.  Contact Susan  at  to reserve your spot on the team.

Founder’s Award Chosen at Fall Pow Wow

Illini Lodge will conduct the elections for 2017 honors on Sunday, Oct. 22 for arrowmen dedicated to the higher purpose of the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service.  The elections are held on Sunday morning, following breakfast and are conducted in a manner where the adults select the youth honors and the youth pick the adult recipients.

Once each year, a limited number of dedicated Arrowmen are voted upon by a Vigil Honor selection committee of the lodge.  A select few candidates are chosen to be tested for the Vigil Honor.   For Illini Lodge, the Vigil Honor Call-Out ceremony will be held on the Saturday evening of the Fall Pow Wow at the conclusion of the Ordeal Ceremony.  On October 21st, the 2017 candidates for the Vigil Honor will be announced at Camp Drake.  All Vigil Honor members are encouraged to attend the ceremony and congratulate the candidates.   As part of the weekend, a special Anthony Martin signature steak fry will follow the OA ceremonies in the Dining Hall.
