PRAIRIELANDS COUNCIL NEWS

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many families in and outside of Scouting that have been affected by the historic flooding in South Central Texas. The councils that have been significantly impacted include Sam Houston Area Council (Houston), Three Rivers Council (Beaumont), Bay Area Council (Galveston), and South Texas Council (Corpus Christi), as well as counties within the Alamo Area (San Antonio) and Capitol Area (Austin) councils.

 

We are working with the leadership teams of these local councils to make sure their staffs and families are safe. We are also getting input on property damage at council offices and camps. As the storms continue in the area, we will continuously evaluate the needs of our people and facilities.

 

Thank you to those who have asked for ways to assist in helping the Scouting family. Given the extent of response efforts required, we understand it is important for first responders to focus on the most pressing emergencies without a well-intended influx of volunteers. As such, the best way to help in the near-term is to support relief efforts financially.

To facilitate this, we have established an online giving site to handle donations at:

scoutingemergency.kintera.org/texas.

 

Through this site, donations can be designated for specific councils or for all of the councils most affected by the flooding. These funds will be used to rebuild and restore BSA facilities and programs.

To provide immediate support for food and shelter needs in the area, we encourage you to donate directly to the American Red Cross and/or Salvation Army:

  • American Red Cross: Donate online at redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Southern Region Director Ron Oats has designated Area Director Rob Hofmann as project lead for BSA’s response to this need. Please make sure to coordinate any efforts with Rob before moving forward to ensure we provide a coordinated response.

Fighting Illini Scout Camporee

The Fighting Illini Scout Camporee returns for its second year on October 14th and we are looking forward to a great event!

 

First, you should regularly be checking the FISC webpage at campdrake.com/fisc for updates as the event draws near and updates will become more frequent.  The cost is still only $35 to watch a Big Ten football game, dinner, a patch, a movie on the big screen at the stadium, and camping at Memorial Stadium!  The movie has been chosen and it is The Game Plan.

 

It's really easy to register for this event through Tentaroo.  Registration through Tentaroo should take no more than 5 minutes as we only need to know the number of Scouts, Adults, non-Scout youth, and non-Scout adults as well as any food allergy concerns and whether or not you plan to camp on Friday evening at Camp Drake.  If you need assistance registering, please contact Susan Coller at susan.coller@scouting.orgor 217-531-0219.

 

In addition to registering through Tentaroo, there are incentives to sign-up as early as possible.  The sooner you sign-up, the better your ticket location will be for the football game!  Payment is not due at the time of registering, but must be paid either online or at the Scout Office by September 29th.  That's also the last day to make any changes to numbers without forfeiting the payment or paying the $10 late fee.  Even if you register prior to September 29th, the registration will not be considered complete and on-time unless payment has also been received.

 

You don't want to miss this event!  It's open to ALL Scouting units including Girl Scout units and out-of-council units, so tell your neighbors and friends near and far about this event.  It's also a great recruiting opportunity.  The Fighting Illini are looking to be more improved this year on the field and you won't want to miss this opportunity to see them and to camp at historic Memorial Stadium!

 

Council Fall Camporee

Emergency Preparedness is the theme for the 2017 Prairielands Council Camporee on September 8-10 at Wimple Park near Tuscola.  Requirements for First Aid, Emergency Prep., and Fishing merit badges will be reviewed.  Special exhibitions will be provided by Fire, Police, and EMS units, as well as the Civilian Air Corps.  The discounted registration fee of $11.00 is due August 25.  Please contact Noah Ruggieri with any questions at  noruggoem@gmail.com. Fall Recruitment in Prairie Fire

Rocket into Scouting this fall and start your recruitment plans now! Plan to be a part of the Rocket Launching theme for the fall membership drive in the Prairielands Council.  Special rocket kits will be available for all new members completing an application and joining a pack, troop, or crew. Cub Scout Fun Day

The Prairie Fire Cub Scout fun day will be held at the Champaign County Fairgrounds on September 24, 2017 from 1-4pm. Cost for the event is only $5. An informational flyer can be found Join us for a fun day full of activities that include: BB Guns, Sling Shots, Archery, 50 Yard Dash, Softball Throw, Long Jump, Pushups, Situps, and a fabulous Rocket Launch! Cub Scout Fun Day in September                                                                              

This fall, Many Trails Cub Scout Fun Day campers will enjoy pedal cars, sports, water games, and archery.   All parents and siblings are encouraged to participate in the events of the Fun Day at Camp Drake in Catlin on Saturday, September 23, 2017.  The Day Camp will begin at 1:00 pm and continue to 4:00 pm

 

DISTRICT INVITATION

The Many Trails District is looking for service minded volunteers to assist with special Scouting tasks.  The District Committee and Commissioners Staff are district level Scouters who help units improve their program and support the efforts of the council.  Additional volunteers are being sought to join the district team.  The goal of the district is to assist units and the council in a variety of options.

Go to Smilin Pumpkin!

All Cub Scouts should go to the Smilin’ Pumpkin at Camp Robert Drake near Oakwood, IL.  All current & potential Cub Scouts and families are invited to join the fun from 1:00 pm to 4:00 on October 29thFamily participation is encouraged, so siblings can attend and participate. Three different shooting sports areas will be set up to allow for a variety of targets and shooting difficulty.  Sports games on the plateau will feature basketball, soccer, and Frisbee games.  Mark your calendar for the premier Cub Scout event of the fall.

Exceptional Youth Leader Training

Illini Lodge invites all arrowmen to attend the leadership seminar to share instruction on management techniques and committee operations. Be a part of Lodge Leadership Development will be conducted on Sunday, November 12 at the Illinois Fire Service Institute, 11 Gerty Drive in south Champaign.  Topics for this session will review leadership styles, effective communications, and the committee structure of Illini Lodge.  All arrowmen, both youth and adult, are encouraged to participate in this lodge-building activity.  Plan to prepare for additional Cheerful Brotherhoodlyness. Mark this date for great leadership skills instruction!

 

Lumberjack Day on 11/11

Volunteer work crews will be helping to prepare the winter wood supply for the cabins of Camp Robert Drake on Saturday, November 11.  Beginning at 9:00 am at the Tin Shed, crews will be assigned to cut or split wood to provide heating fuel for the cold-weather campers.

Section Conclave

Section Conclave is September 15 – September 17 at fabulous Camp Drake! Come join the members of the C3B section at Camp Drake for an awesome weekend full of training, and fun activities only seen at Conclave! The cost for Illini Lodge members is $45, and all registration is done online by going to: http://www.campdrake.com/section-conclave-registration.  We need all the help we can get to ensure a smooth and fantastic weekend!

 

MULTI-STATE  ARROWMAN EVENT

Illini Lodge of the Order of the Arrow will host six lodges from throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri to conduct a fabulous leadership event known as the Section C-3B Conclave.  This Conclave will be held September 15-17, 2017 at Camp Drake near Fairmount, IL.  Enjoy a film-fest themed weekend.!

 

Officer Elections

The top leadership for Illini Lodge will be selected at the Fall Pow Wow during the weekend of October 20-21, 2017. The positions include Lodge Chief, Vice Chief of Administration, Vice-Chief of Activities, Vice-Chief of Inductions, Secretary, and Treasurer.  All dues-paying Illini Lodge youth members are eligible to run for a position and participate in the election.  In the Order of the Arrow, you are considered a youth member until you turn 21 years of age.

 

Pumpkin Staff

Keen-eyed shooting sports arrowmen are sought to help lead the Smiling Pumpkin Outdoor Sports Festival on Sunday October 29th at Camp Robert Drake.  The day starts with a tasty pizza lunch, followed by program support for nearly 300 Cub Scouts and their families as shooting sports ranges are set up throughout the camp facility.  Arrowmen of all sizes are needed to help with archery, slingshots, bb guns, bicycling, pedal car races, sports events, and much more.  Please plan to help on Sunday, October 29th at Camp Drake.   For more information, contact Mike Graham at  mike.graham@scouting.org
