Council Pinewood Derby Race

Save the date and plan to be among the contestants!  Saturday April 8, 2017 at Judah Christian School (908 N Prospect Ave, Champaign).  Each Pack can send up to six Scouts for the Race Division and six Scouts for the Show Division.  A Scout can only compete in one division.  Registration fee:  $7.00 per Scout (includes race participation, insurance and patch).  Registration due for all Race and Show Divisions by March 27, 2017.  Payment due with registration at the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center.  Registration form and Race Day schedule available here:

OPEN RACE this year.  Open to all Scouts, siblings, adults, friends.  Only $10.00 per car entry.  Trophies will be awarded.  Race will follow immediately after the Council Race Division.  Flyer available on the PrairielandsBSA website.


Candy Bars

The second order of Candy Bars will be delivered on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.   Haven’t heard about the time frame but I expect it to be mid-morning.  I will send out an email to candy chairs when they arrive.    If you would like to pick up additional candy bars please send me an email at and I will have them set aside for you.    If you have too much and would like to return cases please let me know and I will accept returns.    The candy bar prize drawing will be on Friday, March 10th.   Units have until 1 p.m. Friday, March 10th to get names in the drawing for week 2.    If you have any questions, please let me know at 217-531-0218 or by email.


Camp Candy Sale Winners

Congratulations to the weekly prize drawing winners for Week #1    Your Scouting program can still get involved in the 2017 Camp Candy Sale.  Tasty Kathryn Beich products can be picked up at two locations throughout the council, Champaign, and Danville.  The sale will end Friday March 31rd, so your unit can check out the candy for a week or just a weekend



Glenn is retiring as of March 31, 2017.   His official last day working will be Thursday, March 16th.   We will be hosting an Open House on March 14, 2017 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.   Come in and wish to a Happy Retirement and enjoy some cake.


2017 National Jamboree: A Once In A Lifetime Experience!

We are still looking for more Scouts to fill out the Prairielands Council Contingent.  Boy Scouts who are First Class and age 12 (or 11 and completed 6th grade) and under age 18  may attend.

Tromp the Trail April 1

Blaze the trail through the woods at the annual Trail Tromp hiking day at Camp Robert Drake on April 1st to win your own Global Positioning System.   All of the Trail Tromp participants will be eligible for the drawing for a hand-held GPS device, sponsored by Illini Lodge of the Order of the Arrow.


Earn the Camping Gold Card

Any council units that provide service to each of the three Tool Time Work Days on Saturdays, March 18, April 8, and May 13 will be awarded the TOOL TIME GOLD CARD, which will earn the unit free campsite camping for a calendar year for August, 2017 to July of 2018.   The volunteer service requirement must exceed 9 total Scouts, leaders, volunteers, or 50% of the unit’s current membership   (whichever is greater)   from the unit.  The Tool Time Work Days are camp clean-up events, where supporters of Camp Drake assist in the process of getting our grounds and facilities ready for summer. Tool Time projects include tasks such as raking, brush removal, trail maintenance, and firewood preparation.  The work day schedule runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with a lunch provided for all participants. 


Family Night Reunions at Summer Camp

As part of the 85th Anniversary of Camp Robert Drake, special family night reunions will be held for various Scouts and Scouters of the Prairielands Council.  Each of the four weekly Family Nights at Camp Drake will recognize a group of individuals involved in special ways on the banks of the Salt Fork River.   All Eagle Scouts in attendance will be recognized, as well as all members of the Order of the Arrow.   Past staff and participants in Woodbadge Training will be honored, as well as past counselors of the Camp Drake staff.   Please share this information with any interested Scouts and Scouters who fit into these categories.  All supporters of Scouting and Camp Drake are encouraged to visit this summer.


The special dates will be:   Wed. June 21 – Order of the Arrow members,   Wed. Jun 28 – Eagle Scouts,  Wed. July 12 – Camp Drake staff Alumni,   Wed. July 19 - Woodbadge Training participants




Many Trails Meeting in Danville

The next district meeting of the district will be held this Thursday, March 9th beginning at 6:30 pm at the Danville Scout office, located at 305 W. Woodbury near Payless Shoes.  All district committee members and unit commissioners are encouraged to attend this gathering to gear up for the 2017 Scouting year and create plans for upcoming efforts.  Your help in supporting units with leader training and program assistance is needed.


Candy Bar Pick-up in Danville

The Danville Scout office will be one of the sites for the Camp Candy Sale.  The office will be open each day this week from noon until 5:00 pm.   Please call ahead, if you know a specific time you will be there.  For more info on the Many Trails candy pick-up, call Mike at 531-0212.


“FlashLight Night”  in March

Special “85th Anniversary” lights with show off the shine of the Scouting spirit from the banks of the Salt Fork.  Make arrangement to have a troop celebration for summer soon. Each troop registered to attend a week of camp can pick up their flashlight packet from their OA Camp Promotions Team or see Susan at the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center in Champaign.




March Commissioner's Meeting:  We will meet at the Illinois Fire Safety Institute on Gerty Drive at 6:00pm on March 8th.   It's time to talk "Spring Round Ups!"  We will also answer more questions about Detailed Assessments.


We will also have a Prairie Fire Round Table right after the Commissioner Meeting at 7:00pm.

All scout leaders are invited to the Round Table meeting.  We will be talking about our Spring Recruiting plans.  Get those new scouts involved so they can take advantage of summer activities! Come network and share ideas!  Raffle prizes!


Prairie Fire District Camporee

“TREK AROUND THE WORLD”!!!  April 21 – 23, 2017.  Planet Camp Drake.   Explore experiences based on countries from around the world.  Get your passport punched.  Compete with other patrols for fastest, furthest, best.  Win the trophy and be the first around the world.

Registration is open now.  Cost:  $15.00 per person ON OR BEFORE April 14, $20.00 per person after April 14th.  (Volunteer Staff only $5.00)  Cracker Barrel for all staff, Scoutmasters and SPL’s on Friday night.  Saturday lunch provided.

Pith Helmets Awarded

Please turn in a listing of the words (3 or more letters) to the Champaign Scout office  OR bring your entry sheet to the Trail Tromp by noon to the Trading Post at Camp Drake on April 1st.   Any Cub Scout age youth is eligible to discover the hidden words of the SAFARI SEARCH ON THE Cub Camping Placemats Cub Camping Safari Pith Helmets will be presented to each grade level winners in the LION, TIGER, WOLF, BEAR, and WEBELOS categories.  The Safari Leaders will even have their own word discovery Pith Helmet winner.  Happy Hunting!

Tool Time to Help Camp Drake

All Scouts, Scouters, and parents are welcome to help prepare camp for all the fabulous activities in 2017.  Primary projects will focus on clearing campsites and removing brush, brambles, and leaves from program areas.  Basic cleaning will be needed in the cabins and buildings.  Spring cleaning begins on Saturday, March 18 at 9:00 am at the north end of the Tin Shed at Camp Robert Drake near Oakwood, IL.  A lunch will be served at 12:15 and a closing thank you note will be conducted at the end of the day at 3:00 pm.  Please encourage your pack, troop, or crew to help with this Tool Time date, or another Saturday on April 8th or May 13th.




Order of the Arrow Elections

Whether you plan to conduct the election on your own or bring in assistance from your chapter, it is important to designate the date of your election and announce it to the unit as early as possible.  All troop/team leaders should review their materials to prepare for the election requirements.   Contact your OA leadership, if you need assistance in conducting the election in your troop/team.
