Council Activities Committee Meeting Tomorrow

We encourage anyone interested in joining the council activities committee to attend one of our meetings to learn more about it.  The agenda for the next meeting will include a recap of the Fall Camporee and planning for the Fighting Illini Scout Camporee and the Klondike Derby amongst other topics.

The next meeting will be tomorrow, September 21st at 7:00 pm at the Illinois Fire Services Institute at 11 Gerty Drive in Champaign.  The meeting after that will be Wednesday, October 5th at 7:00 pm at the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center.  We will not have a meeting on September 28th as originally printed in the council calendar.

Wood Cutting Day at Camp Drake

Please bring your own work gloves and a positive helping attitude.  Service minded volunteers, both youth and adult, are being sought to help with wood cutting needs at Camp Drake on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016.   Beginning with job assignments at 9:00 am, all volunteers are encouraged to help cut, split, stack, haul, and maneuver limbs, logs, and branches.   Any helpful equipment that you can bring will make the event better,  but camp can supply woods tools for the day.

Military Donations

If you have not contacted your area American Legion or V.F.W. Post, look up these groups in your community.  They have traditionally been great supporters of Scouting.  Campmasters Popcorn, working with the Prairielands Council will continue a great program for the fall sale. Consumers are able to make a purchase of popcorn for donation to military personnel, using a standard order form.  The form includes columns that give consumers the option of buying popcorn for the troops at two price levels.

Help Needed!  Have Fun!

For all who have contact with a Boy Scout Troop we need your help this Saturday morning from 9:30 to 12:00. This is for the mattress domino event at Centennial Park.

All scouts 12 and over will be participating in the actual event of standing in front of a mattress. Please have them meet me at the park before 9:30 to get instructions and do a run through before we do it officially.

Thanks in advance for all participants we need at least 75 or more scouts.

Cub Scout Family Fun Day at Camp Drake

Show off your stuff at the Many Trails District Family Fun Day on Saturday, October 8th.   From 2:00 to 5:00 pm, all Cub Scouts and their families can enjoy shooting sports, and rocketry events at Camp Drake near Oakwood. All Cub Scouts and their siblings are invited to join in the fun.

Shooting Sports Leaders

A training will be held at the Nogle Shooting Sports range at Camp Drake, just prior to the Smilin’ Pumkin event on Oct. 23.  Any mature Scout or Scouter can participate in this training.  No registration is needed for the training session for Cub Scouts shooting sports instructors from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm noon,  but following the instructional course, participants will be asked to practice their skills as part of the afternoon shooting event.

Smilin’ Pumpkin Camping

The fourth weekend of October is typically one of the last good weekends of the year for decent camping weather…especially when Cub Scouts are involved. There are still cabins and campsites available at Camp Drake for rent for the weekend of Oct. 21-23.  Take advantage of having a home base for the big Smilin’ Pumpkin Outdoor Shooting Sports Fest.

Boy Scout Recruitment

Recruiting rockets are also available for Boy Scouts who bring a friend to join the troop.  Encourage your current Boy Scouts to solicit their peers into your fall outdoor events.  As students have moved into a new grade in their school, new activities are appealing as young men grow.  Remember to offer joining options for the middle school boys in your communities.

Illini Lodge Adults!

Please be encouraging your boys to attend this years Fall Powwow.  This year's will be a very exciting powwow.  The theme is "Let's Play in the OA" which is a videogame theme (yes, there will be real videogames for the boys to play).  The event starts on October 14th and runs throught the 16th and the fee until October 7th is $20.  On the 8th it goes up to $25, then at the door it will be $30.  The Cabin fee is an additional $10.  Your dues need to be up to date to attend the Pow Wow.  If you need to find out your dues status, contact Susan at or 217-531-0219.

For members that have not yet done their ordeal the entire fee will be $40.  For members that want to earn their brotherhood, they will need to add $20 on to their registration fees.  Youth and Adults that do not have both parts A and B filled out and signed will not be permitted to spend the night at the camp.  These need to be signed by a parent or guardian of the youth (under 18).  Phone calls will not be counted in place of a signature.

If you plan to bring a group of youth with you please make sure they are prepared!!  In order for the youth to enjoy the event and get the most out of it, it is important that they have the proper equipment.  This includes a tent if they are not staying in a cabin; a sleeping bag, a pillow, clothes to sleep in, a class A, work clothes, boots, a towell for the showers, extra socks, a coat or jacket, toiletries including a toothpast and toothbrush (I know thats obvious but those are usually the first things they forget, and work gloves.  BRING YOUR OA SASH!!!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Bryant Deer at (217)418-9846 or email me at  I can't wait to see you all there!!  This has been a GREAT year!!
